Outline how corporate payout policies have broadly changed over time

The idea

Over recent decades the way companies return cash has shifted. Share repurchases have grown as a share of total payouts, first in the US and increasingly in Europe and other markets, because they are flexible and often more tax-efficient. In several developed markets, including the US, the proportion of listed companies paying regular cash dividends has fallen over the long run, even as the companies that do pay tend to be large and mature. Payout practices still differ widely across countries, reflecting taxes, ownership structures and regulation. The trap is overstating the shift: dividends remain an important channel, and trends vary by market rather than moving uniformly worldwide.
