Explain how relationships, emotions and family systems interact with wealth and the way it is managed

CFA® Level III · Private Wealth Pathway · Working With the Wealthy · L3.PW.2.a

The idea

Wealth is rarely just a portfolio: it carries identity, status, family history and expectations. Family members may differ in their attitudes to money, their risk tolerance and their say in decisions, and events such as a business sale, divorce or a founder's death can shift power and trigger conflict. Tensions between generations or siblings, entitlement, secrecy and unclear roles can undermine even a well-built investment plan. The adviser should identify who actually makes decisions, who is affected, and what each person values, while staying neutral and treating each client fairly. The trap is serving only the dominant family member and ignoring the dynamics that later derail the strategy.
