Propose, and defend, an asset allocation and investment choices for a private client

CFA® Level III · Private Wealth Pathway · Investment Planning · L3.PW.4.a

The idea

Begin from objectives and constraints: required return, ability and willingness to bear risk, horizons, liquidity, taxes, legal limits and unique circumstances such as concentrated or legacy holdings and values-based preferences. Allocation may be set at the level of goal-based sub-portfolios, with human capital, pensions and any operating business counted in the total picture. Implementation then chooses vehicles, active or passive management, and tax-aware account location. A strong justification links each choice to a specific objective or constraint and shows the trade-offs, such as accepting lower expected return to protect an essential goal. The trap is recommending a textbook allocation without accounting for taxes on selling existing positions, liquidity needs or the client's behavioural limits.
