Tutor agreement
Version 2026-10-14b · Last updated 14 October 2026
The agreement between you and Charta Learning when you tutor on it. It sits alongside the terms of use and the privacy notice, and where it differs for tutors, this agreement wins. Plain words where plain words will do.
Tutor sessions are a closed beta. Everything here applies in the beta, but no payment is taken from learners or made to tutors yet. Before any money moves we will tell you, in writing and in good time, how and when tutors are paid, and you may stop tutoring instead.
Who this is between
Sets and Social Limited, a company registered in England and Wales, number 16932988, at 14 Alison Drive, Camberley, Surrey, GU15 2DY, which operates Charta Learning (“we”, “us”), and you, the individual who applied to tutor (“you”). You agree to this by ticking the declarations on the application form, and again by accepting a booking.
What we do and what you do
We run a marketplace where learners find tutors, ask for a session and, when payments are live, pay for it. You are an independent tutor, not our employee, worker, agent or partner. You decide whether to offer times, which requests to accept, what you charge and how you teach. We do not supervise your teaching, guarantee you any number of bookings, or give you any exclusivity, and you are free to work elsewhere.
Before you are listed
- Everything on your application is true and kept up to date. Tell us if it changes.
- You hold the qualifications you stated, and teach only the exams, subjects and levels you have passed or are otherwise qualified to teach, for the CFA® Program or any other qualification. We check them, and may ask for proof of your identity, your qualifications and your right to work as a self-employed person where you live.
- We may contact the referee you named, after telling you first.
- We decide who is listed, and may decline, pause or remove a tutor at any time, for the reasons below or where we reasonably think it protects learners. An application is not an offer.
Exam integrity
This is the one rule with no exceptions. You will never use, share, ask a learner for, or discuss confidential or recalled exam questions or answers for any qualification you teach, and you confirm you have no access to unreleased exam material through any other role (for example as an exam writer, grader or reviewer). If you learn that a learner has such material, you end that part of the session and tell us. Breaking this rule ends your listing at once and we may report it to the body that awards the qualification.
Running sessions
- Be on time, prepared and professional. Give the learner your full attention for the time booked.
- Accept a request only if you can do the session. Add the https meeting link when you accept, and use a service that works without the learner installing anything unusual.
- Do not record a session without the learner’s clear agreement in advance, and delete any recording when it is no longer needed.
- Make no promise, or hint, that anybody will pass. Describe results you have seen accurately.
- Treat every learner with respect. No harassment, discrimination or pressure of any kind, and no contact that is not about their studies.
- Learners are adults. If you have any reason to think a learner is under 18, end the session and tell us.
Cancellations and no-shows
If you must cancel, do it on the platform as early as you can, and at least 24 hours before the start unless it is an emergency. A learner who cancels more than 24 hours before the start owes nothing. A session cancelled by the learner with less notice, or missed by them, may be charged in whole or in part once payments are live, and we will say how in advance. If you miss a session or cancel at short notice repeatedly, we may pause your listing.
Fees and payment
- You set your hourly rate, and the fee for a session is that rate for the time booked, shown to the learner before they ask. You can change your rate for future sessions, never for one already requested.
- We keep a service fee of 20% of the session fee. You receive the other 80%. We show both amounts on each request, so you always know what you will receive before you accept.
- While payments are not live, we record these amounts and no money moves.
- When payments are live, we will take payment through a payment provider and pay you after the session is marked done, on a schedule we will tell you in advance. We may hold a payment while a complaint or refund is being resolved, and may take back a payment we have to refund to the learner because of your fault.
- You are responsible for your own tax, National Insurance and any VAT registration, and for any local requirements where you live. We do not withhold tax for you.
- Do not take payment for a session outside Charta from a learner you met through it, or ask a learner to do so, in order to avoid the service fee.
Learners’ information
You see the message a learner wrote with their request, and nothing else about them: not their email address, progress or notes. Use what you learn only to deliver the session. You are responsible for it under data protection law, so keep it secure, share it with nobody, and delete it when you no longer need it. We handle your own information as the privacy notice describes.
Our name and the awarding bodies’ names
Charta Learning is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by CFA Institute or any other awarding body. Do not suggest to anybody that you tutor on behalf of an awarding body, or that Charta is a recognised prep provider for one. Use a qualification’s designation and marks only as its awarding body allows. Material you write for your sessions is yours. By putting your profile on Charta you let us show it to learners for as long as you are listed.
Reviews and complaints
A learner may tell us about a problem with a session. We will tell you what was said, hear your side, and decide fairly. We may refund the learner and adjust what you receive. You can tell us about a problem with a learner in the same way.
Ending this agreement
You can stop at any time, after honouring sessions you have accepted or cancelling them as above. We can pause or end your listing at once if you break the exam integrity rule, give false information, put a learner at risk, or treat anyone badly, and otherwise by giving you 14 days’ notice. The sections on exam integrity, learners’ information, fees already owing and liability continue afterwards.
Liability
Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Otherwise, we are not responsible for the content or quality of your teaching, or for what a learner does with it, and neither of us is liable to the other for indirect or consequential loss, or loss of profit. Our total liability to you under this agreement is limited to the fees we have received for your sessions in the 12 months before the claim. You are responsible for any loss we or a learner suffer because you broke this agreement.
Changes
We may change this agreement to reflect how the service or the law changes. We will give you at least 30 days’ notice by email of a change that makes it worse for you, and you may stop tutoring instead. The version you accepted is recorded with your application.
Law
This agreement is governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction, though if you are a consumer or employee elsewhere that does not take away rights you have under the law of your own country.
